Wizz Air announces opening of new base in Bratislava, Slovakia
On August 13, 2024, Wizz Air announced the opening of its new base in the Slovakian capital, Bratislava.
The pan-European ultra-low-cost carrier will launch 12 new routes out of Bratislava Airport (BTS), connecting it to Athens (ATH), Alicante (ALC), Barcelona (BCN), Malaga (AGP), Basel EuroAirport (BSL), Oslo (OSL), Lamezia Terme (SUF), Naples (NAP) and Palermo (PMO) in Italy, Niš (INI) in Serbia, as well as Plovdiv (PDV) and Varna (VAR) in Bulgaria.
The new routes will start throughout the period between November 14 and December 16, 2025.
The launch of another new route from Bratislava to Bucharest Otopeni (OTP), which will start on October 28, 2025, was previously announced in July 2025.
These 13 new routes add to two already served by Wizz Air Bratislava – London-Luton (LTN) and Skopje (SKP), in Northern Macedonia.
The establishment of this new base, which will see two Airbus A321neo aircraft be permanently based at the Slovakian airport, represents a massive capacity increase for Bratislava Airport.
To put Wizz Air’s investment into perspective, the new base will represent a capacity increase of almost one million seats per year. Bratislava Airport handled just short of two million passengers in 2025.
The Slovakian capital has rather limited regular air services, in no small measure due to its proximity to the much larger and better connected Vienna International Airport (VIE), which is only approximately 50 km away across the Austrian border. Vienna is also home to one of Wizz Air’s bases, from where it flies to a couple of dozen destinations.
As of August 2025, the main operator by far at Bratislava airport is Wizz Air’s arch-competitor, Ryanair. The Irish low-cost carrier flies to some 16 destinations year round from the Slovakian capital, although there is almost no overlap with the network that just announced by Wizz Air.
The remaining airlines using Bratislava Airport are, almost without exception, charter and seasonal operators serving leisure destinations.
In the summer of 2025, Wizz Air announced that it would be expanding capacity in several key European markets, such as Romania and the United Kingdom, following the strategic decision to close down its Abu Dhabi venture and redeploy fleet and resources to Europe.
