Wizz Air re-opens former base in Chişinău, Moldova with new routes and aircraft
Wizz Air has announced it will be re-opening its former base in Chişinău, Moldova, due to increased demand. The budget carrier will offer direct connections from the country’s capital to 16 destinations in the northern winter of 2024/25, which includes eight new routes. Including all the destinations served in the forthcoming winter period, Wizz Air will offer more than 400,000 seats.
The airline will be offering non-stop flights between Chişinău International Airport (RMO) and Berlin (BER), Bologna (BLQ), Brussels-Charleroi (CRL), Dortmund (DTM), Memmingen (MEM), Paris-Beauvais (BVA), and Verona (VRN), as well as opening a new route to Nuremberg (NUE) in Germany. These routes will supplement Wizz Air flights that already operate into Chişinău from Abu Dhabi (AUH), Budapest (BUD), Milan (MXP), Venice (VCE), Vienna (VIE), Rome (FCO), London-Luton (LTN), and Warsaw (WAW).
With the reopening of the base in Moldova, the airline will also be basing a new Airbus A320 at Chişinău Airport, a decision which “underlines its commitment to the Moldovan market and its continued expansion towards reaching a fleet of 500 aircraft in the next eight years” says the carrier.
Wizz Air“Wizz Air started its operations in Moldova in 2013 and opened its base in Chişinău in March 2017,” said Andras Rado, Head of Communications and Government Affairs at Wizz Air. “During this time, the airline carried almost four million passengers. We are pleased to resume our core operations and add more direct flights that connect Chişinău with 16 destinations, underscoring our growth vision.”
“This development will provide almost 91,000 additional seats, ensuring a 374% increase in capacity during the winter season for passengers traveling to and from Chişinău,” he added.
“The reopening of the Wizz Air operational base in Chişinău proves once again that our airport is becoming more and more attractive in the air transport industry,” said Sergiu Spoială, General Manager of the Chişinău International Airport.
“An airline base means the expansion of the network, new employment opportunities at the local level for aviation and tourism, as well as the diversification of aeronautical activities, and the strengthening of commercial relations between the Republic of Moldova and European countries,” added Spoială.
