Wizz Air wins award for sustainable airline of the year in nod to Net Zero goal
Wizz Air is celebrating having won an award for sustainable airline of the year, in testament to the low-cost carrier’s ‘Net Zero by 2050’ roadmap as unveiled earlier this year.
On September 22, 2025, Wizz Air announced that it had won the coveted prize at the Airline Economics Sustainability Awards Gala, which celebrates aviation leaders in “environmental stewardship, innovation, and societal well-being”.
Potential winners were judged on their initiatives during the 12 months period up to the end of August 2025 through industry-wide surveys by Estuaire.
According to Wizz Air, the judging panel highlighted the airline’s “transparent reporting, investment in fuel-efficient aircraft, and operational strategies that prioritize environmental performance”.
“We are honored to receive the award of Sustainable Airline of the Year 2025,” said Dorottya Durucsko, Head of Government Affairs and Sustainability at Wizz Air. “This award is a testament to the dedication of our colleagues and the progress we are making on our journey to Net Zero. We will continue investing in new aircraft technology, partnering to scale the production of sustainable aviation fuel and advocating for airspace reform.”
She added: “Recognition from Airline Economics and Estuaire strengthens our belief that we are on the right path of strengthening ecosystem of aviation. Let’s WIZZ!”
In April 2025, Wizz Air called for “radical change and radical intervention” from governments and industry stakeholders to fire up “stalled” Net Zero ambitions.
Against the backdrop of Earth Day, Wizz Air laid out its roadmap for achieving Net Zero by 2050, with a focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production heralded as the key-component for change.
According to the airline, during the financial year 2025, its emissions intensity was 52.2 grams of CO2 per passenger per kilometer.
“With a target to reduce carbon intensity by 25% by 2030 and an aspiration to power 10% of its flights with SAF by the same year, Wizz Air’s long-term strategy is anchored in flights (30% emissions reductions from new aircraft technology and fleet renewal), fuel (53% emissions reductions from SAF) and footprint (4% emissions reductions from air traffic management modernization),” said a Wizz Air spokesperson.
