EU and UN to debate Poland drone incursion as Warsaw seeks more air defenses
A day after Russian drones violated Polish airspace in what Warsaw has called a deliberate attack, the European Parliament and the United Nations Security Council announced they would address the incident in emergency sessions. Poland, meanwhile, is pressing NATO allies for more air-defense systems and has restricted flights along its eastern border.
Numerous Russian drones violated Polish airspace on the night of September 9 to 10, 2025. Polish F-16s, Dutch F-35s, Italian AWACS, a NATO Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft, and German Patriots were all involved in intercepting the drones.
The North Atlantic Council met on September 10, 2025, after Poland invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, with allies condemning Russia’s reckless behavior and pledging to defend every inch of Allied territory.

UN Security Council session requested
Poland’s Foreign Ministry confirmed it has formally requested an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council to highlight what it described as an “unprecedented attack by Russian drones against a UN, EU, and NATO member state.”
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski told Polish media that the incident is “not just a test for Poland, it’s a test for all of NATO, not only militarily, but politically as well.”
The European Parliament said its plenary session on September 11, 2025, will include an extraordinary debate on the “deliberate violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones” and how the European Union can show solidarity with Warsaw. Lawmakers are also due to vote on a separate resolution concerning Gaza.
Warsaw calls for Patriots and anti-drone wall
Sikorski also said Poland has asked its allies to provide additional Patriot systems and anti-drone technology to strengthen its defenses.
“We need Patriots because drones are not the only form of Russian threat to our airspace. We also need an anti-drone wall,” he told reporters.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey said London was considering ways to respond, including potentially redeploying RAF Typhoon fighters that had rotated out of Poland six weeks ago.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that during talks on September 10, 2025, with the leaders of France, the UK, Ukraine, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands, he had received not only messages of solidarity but also “concrete proposals” to support Poland’s air defense.
German Deputy Defense Minister Jens Plötner cautioned, however, that Patriots are currently prioritized for Ukraine, given the intensity of Russian strikes there.
“This does not mean that we are shirking our responsibility to protect NATO,” Plötner added.
Eastern Poland flight restrictions
Poland’s Air Navigation Agency (PAŻP) confirmed that air traffic restrictions are now in force along the country’s borders with Belarus and Ukraine until December 9, 2025.
The EP R129 restricted zone imposes a full flight ban for unmanned civilian aircraft around the clock and a nighttime ban for all other traffic, with exemptions only for military operations. Authorities said the step was taken “to ensure national security” following the drone intrusions.
