Thai Airways takes delivery of first GE-powered Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner
Thai Airways has received its first new GE-powered Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from Dublin-based leasing company AerCap.
The delivery, which took place on June 23, 2026, marks another milestone in the airline’s ongoing fleet modernization program.
The handover took place during a ceremony at Boeing’s Delivery Center in Everett, Seattle, and was attended by representatives from Thai Airways, Boeing, GE, and AerCap. The aircraft is the first of four Boeing 787-9s that Thai Airways plans to add to its fleet this year.
A decades-long partnership
Peter Anderson, Chief Commercial Officer of AerCap, said the delivery reflects a long-standing relationship between the lessor and the airline.
“Our relationship with THAI is decades long and this milestone delivery is a testament to our long-standing partnership,” Anderson said. “This aircraft will support THAI’s ongoing fleet renewal program, enhancing efficiency and sustainability across its operations.”
Chai Eamsiri, Chief Executive Officer of Thai Airways, said the new aircraft supports the airline’s growth plans.
“We are delighted to welcome our first new GE-powered 787-9 to the fleet, another milestone that reflects our long partnership with AerCap,” Eamsiri said. “The aircraft’s efficiency and range allow us to grow our network while offering our passengers a more comfortable, modern way to fly.”
What Thai Airways’ new B787-9 aircraft offers
The Boeing 787-9 is a wide-body aircraft known for its long-range capability and fuel efficiency. Thai Airways said the model reduces fuel consumption by up to 20% compared to previous-generation aircraft, supporting the airline’s commitment to sustainable fleet development.
The aircraft features a two-class cabin configuration with 30 Business Class seats in a full lie-flat 1-2-1 layout and 268 Economy Class seats arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration.
Cabin products align with Thai Airways’ existing 787-9 fleet but include enhancements such as upgraded inflight entertainment systems, with 17.3-inch screens in Business Class and 13.3-inch screens in Economy Class. Inflight connectivity is also available throughout the cabin.
Thai Airways said the fleet expansion supports its goal of connecting Thailand with key destinations worldwide while investing in a more modern and passenger-focused operation. With three more 787-9 deliveries scheduled for this year, the airline is positioning itself for continued long-haul growth.
