SMBC places additional order with Airbus for 100 A320neo-family aircraft
SMBC Aviation Capital has taken the spotlight on the first day of the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow by placing an additional order for 100 Airbus A320neo-family aircraft.
Earlier on the same day, the Dublin-based, Japanese-owned leasing giant had placed another order with Airbus’ arch-rival Boeing for another 100 aircraft, of the B737 MAX family in that case.
This Airbus order from SMBC consists of 65 A321neo and 35 A320neo aircraft.
SMBC is already a very large Airbus customer, as is also Sumisho Air Lease Corporation (formerly known as Air Lease Corporation), the acquisition of which SMBC completed in April 2026, together with a consortium of investors which included one of its two shareholders, Sumitomo Corporation, as well as investment firms Apollo and Brookfield.
In the press release announcing the deal, the European aircraft manufacturer quantified both lessors’ fleet and orderbook of all Airbus types at 900 aircraft.
“This significant new order will give our airline customers access to a continuous delivery pipeline of the latest technology A320neo family aircraft into the mid-2030s,” said Peter Barrett, CEO of SMBC Aviation Capital, who added that this order confirms the lessor’s confidence in that aircraft of the A320neo family will continue to be in high demand over the long term. The post SMBC places additional order with Airbus for 100 A320neo-family aircraft appeared first on AeroTime.
