Anduril Rolls Out First YFQ-44 Fury Combat Drone Built in U.S. Paving the Way for Mass Production

Anduril has unveiled the first YFQ-44A Fury autonomous combat aircraft assembled at its Arsenal-1 facility in Pickaway County, Ohio. The milestone moves the factory into aircraft production and strengthens the U.S. Air Force’s effort to field Collaborative Combat Aircraft for future high-intensity operations.

Located near Rickenbacker International Airport on a site covering approximately 2 km², Arsenal-1 is designed to reach an annual production capacity of up to 150 Fury aircraft. The project receives $310 million in financial support from JobsOhio and is expected to create nearly 4,000 jobs by 2035. Although part of the infrastructure, including the main assembly hangar and a second production building, remains under construction, Anduril has already moved from site development to aircraft manufacturing.
In a post published on its official X account on July 27, 2026, Anduril confirms that the displayed YFQ-44A is the first aircraft ever built at the Arsenal-1 facility. The company also states that employees recruited in Ohio were initially trained at its California facilities before returning to Pickaway County to establish production processes and transfer the expertise required to increase manufacturing output. This first rollout takes place only eighteen months after the project was announced, illustrating the company’s objective of shortening industrial production cycles for next-generation air systems.
The YFQ-44A Fury is one of two aircraft selected by the U.S. Air Force for Increment 1 of the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, alongside the General Atomics YFQ-42A. Rather than replacing crewed fighters, the aircraft is intended to operate as an autonomous wingman alongside platforms such as the F-35A Lightning II, future aircraft developed under the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, and potentially upgraded F-15 and F-16 variants. This operational concept is intended to increase the number of sensors, weapons, and tactical options available to a formation while reducing the exposure of aircrews in heavily contested environments.
Unlike conventional remotely piloted drones that require continuous operator control, the Fury is designed from the outset around an autonomy-first architecture. During flight testing, the aircraft demonstrates the ability to execute a preplanned mission profile, manage its own flight controls and engine settings, and return under human supervision without continuous stick-and-throttle control. This operating model aligns with the U.S. Air Force’s objective of enabling fighter pilots to assign missions to multiple autonomous aircraft without having to control each platform directly. According to Anduril, autonomy is integrated from the beginning of the development process rather than added after the airframe is validated, reducing integration risks while allowing capabilities to evolve through software updates.

The Fury belongs to a new generation of jet-powered uncrewed combat aircraft designed to operate in heavily defended airspace. Powered by a single turbofan engine, it offers high subsonic performance and incorporates a modular internal architecture capable of accommodating intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance sensors, electronic warfare payloads, or precision-guided weapons depending on mission requirements. Internal weapon bays reduce radar observability while preserving aerodynamic efficiency. The aircraft is supported by Anduril’s ArsenalOS digital architecture, which manages mission software, aircraft configuration, maintenance, and production throughout the platform’s service life.
The operational concept extends well beyond reconnaissance. The YFQ-44A is intended to operate ahead of crewed formations to extend sensor coverage, identify threats, conduct electronic warfare missions, and engage designated targets when required. It can also provide additional air-to-air or air-to-ground missile capacity, increasing the overall firepower of a formation without requiring additional pilots. This approach supports the U.S. Air Force’s concept of “affordable mass,” which seeks to field larger numbers of comparatively lower-cost autonomous platforms to complicate enemy targeting and reduce operational pressure on crewed aircraft. By distributing sensors, weapons, and combat functions across multiple coordinated aircraft, mixed formations can improve resilience while limiting the risks faced by crewed fighters.
Beyond the aircraft itself, this first production milestone has broader industrial implications. For several years, Anduril has argued that future military competitiveness depends not only on technological performance but also on production speed. The company relies on commercial manufacturing methods, digital engineering, and simplified production processes to increase output while controlling costs. The Collaborative Combat Aircraft program is becoming one of the central elements of U.S. Air Force modernization, with long-term plans calling for the acquisition of several hundred, and eventually more than one thousand, autonomous collaborative aircraft. As China continues expanding both its crewed and uncrewed air capabilities, while Russia pursues combat drone development despite persistent industrial constraints, the United States is seeking to demonstrate its ability to manufacture these systems at a pace consistent with the requirements of high-intensity conflict.
