Italy Sends Eurofighter Jets and SAMP/T Air Defense to Counter Gulf Drone and Missile Threats

Italy has deployed a layered air-defence force across Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain, with Italian reporting also placing elements in the United Arab Emirates, combining Eurofighter F-2000A fighters, airborne early warning, long-range radars, counter-drone systems and ground-based interceptors. Operating since the second half of March 2026, according to the Italian Ministry of Defence, the mission strengthens protection for selected air bases, command sites and critical infrastructure against aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and short-range ballistic missiles.
The force includes a SAMP/T missile battery and a Skynex 35 mm gun battery, giving commanders both long-range interception and close-in defence against lower-cost aerial threats. With about 400 air personnel officially confirmed and roughly 300 Army personnel reported by Il Giornale on July 30, the deployment adds targeted defensive capacity rather than a region-wide shield.

The confirmed air order of battle consists of Task Group Typhoon with four F-2000A fighters, Task Group Argo with one E-550A CAEW aircraft, Task Group Medal with a C-130J or KC-130J transport aircraft, Task Group Kuwait with an AN/TPS-77 radar, and a counter-unmanned-aircraft group using the ACUS-E system. The Ministry of Defence lists personnel in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain but does not identify the operating bases. The Aviationist assessed King Fahd Air Base at Taif as the principal fighter location, based on aircraft movements; that remains an open-source assessment rather than an official disclosure.
The four Eurofighters provide the mobile, outer layer of the Italian contribution. Each F-2000A has two EJ200 turbofans rated at 60 kN dry and 90 kN with afterburner, a maximum take-off weight of 23,500 kg, a published maximum speed of 2,495 km/h and capacity for 6,500 kg of external stores. Italian aircraft are cleared to carry Meteor and AIM-120 AMRAAM radar-guided missiles, IRIS-T and AIM-9L infrared-guided missiles, and an internal 27 mm Mauser cannon. Rome has not disclosed the weapons actually carried in the Gulf, so it is not possible to state that Meteor or any specific AMRAAM variant is deployed. The operationally relevant point is that the fighter can intercept aircraft or cruise missiles beyond the defended site and visually identify ambiguous tracks before engagement. Four aircraft, however, are better suited to quick-reaction alert and limited patrol periods than to maintaining a continuous two-aircraft combat air patrol without substantial maintenance, crew, and tanker support.
The E-550A is the command-and-control node that makes the fighter deployment more useful than four independently operating aircraft. Its ELTA EL/W-2085 electronically scanned radar provides 360-degree coverage and is integrated with communications intelligence, electronic intelligence, electronic-support measures, identification-friend-or-foe equipment, and missile-warning functions. The aircraft has a published range of 12,500 km, can carry almost 19 tonnes of fuel and can transmit a common air picture through NATO-compatible communications and tactical data links. The ground-based AN/TPS-77 adds persistent long-range surveillance, can be deployed in under two hours and uses an open ASTERIX interface for connection to command networks. Together, these sensors extend warning time and permit controllers to assign a Eurofighter, SAMP/T missile or short-range counter-drone weapon according to target speed, altitude and trajectory.
Il Giornale reported that the Army contingent includes one SAMP/T battery and two Leonardo KRONOS radars, with one radar in Saudi Arabia and another in Bahrain. The specific KRONOS model was not identified, which prevents a reliable statement on range or ballistic-missile tracking performance; Leonardo produces several radars under that name, including the D-band AESA KRONOS Power Shield Land for ballistic-missile surveillance and defensive cueing. The SAMP/T report is more operationally significant because the system uses vertically launched Aster 30 interceptors for 360-degree defence against aircraft, cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles. An Aster 30 weighs about 450 kg, is 4.9 metres long, reaches up to Mach 4.5 and combines aerodynamic control with lateral thrusters around its centre of gravity for high-g terminal manoeuvres. The battery and missile version deployed were not disclosed. Italy’s SAMP/T NG can control up to six launchers with eight ready missiles each, but MBDA says Aster B1NT deliveries begin in 2027; the Gulf battery therefore should not be described as B1NT-equipped without additional evidence.
The reported Skynex battery in the UAE covers the lowest kinetic layer. Italy received its first battery on December 18, 2025 under a €73 million contract, with options for three additional systems valued at €204 million. The Italian configuration comprises an air-surveillance and tracking unit, a command post and four Revolver Gun Mk3 firing units. Each 35 mm gun can fire 1,000 rounds per minute to a stated range of four kilometres, while the XTAR 3D radar monitors a radius of up to 50 km. Programmable AHEAD ammunition releases a controlled pattern of sub-projectiles near the aim point, allowing the gun to engage small drones without expending a missile. ACUS-E provides a complementary non-kinetic option through multisensor detection, identification and electromagnetic-spectrum control, although the ministry has not released its Gulf configuration.
The deployment addresses a demonstrated force-protection problem rather than a theoretical contingency. On March 15, 2026, an attack struck a shelter at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and caused the loss of an Italian MQ-9A reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle; The Aviationist also reported damage to an Italian Eurofighter. The Italian force can now detect threats through airborne and ground radars, assign higher-performance targets to fighters or SAMP/T, and reserve Skynex or electronic countermeasures for small drones. Its limitation is magazine depth: four fighters, one reported SAMP/T battery, and one reported Skynex battery can protect priority sites, but they cannot independently absorb a prolonged, multi-axis saturation campaign across the Gulf.
