Canada’s first F-35 completes maiden flight amid review of fighter purchase
Canada’s first Lockheed Martin F-35A completed its maiden flight in Texas on September 23, 2026, as the Canadian government continues to review whether to proceed with its earlier planned purchase of 88 fighters.
Lockheed Martin Canada confirmed the flight in a social media post. The aircraft flew from Fort Worth, where the company assembles the fighter, carrying Royal Canadian Air Force markings. Known by its production designation AR-1, the jet will serve as a CF-35A under Canada’s military designation.
The flight begins airborne testing of the first Canadian aircraft ahead of delivery. Canada’s published schedule calls for the initial eight fighters to be delivered to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona in 2026 and 2027 for pilot training. The first aircraft are expected to arrive in Canada at Cold Lake, Alberta, in late 2028.
Canada announced its agreement to acquire 88 F-35As in January 2023 to replace the RCAF’s CF-18 Hornets. Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered a review of the purchase in March 2025, examining whether the F-35 remained the best choice for the country. The assessment includes military requirements, industrial benefits, potential alternatives, and Canada’s commitments to NORAD and NATO.
The government has committed to the first 16 aircraft, while the broader purchase remains under review. Defense Minister David McGuinty said in September 2026 that Canada would take the time needed to reach a decision.
In February 2026, Canada began paying for long-lead components for 14 F-35s. Those purchases cover parts that must be ordered well before aircraft assembly.
The F-35 purchase review follows worsening relations with the United States, including disputes over tariffs and President Donald Trump’s suggestions that Canada become a US state. Saab’s Gripen has emerged as a possible alternative for part of the replacement fleet.
Canada plans to retire its remaining CF-18s in 2032.
