The United States is moving to arm the B-52H Stratofortress with the Long Range Anti-Ship Missile, combining the bomber’s reach and payload with a potent stand-off weapon for maritime warfare. A Naval Air Systems Command notice published on October 7, 2026, points to renewed integration work that could expand U.S. long-range anti-ship firepower and complicate naval defense planning across the Indo-Pacific.

The United States is moving to give the B-52H Stratofortress a potentially formidable new maritime-strike role, combining the bomber’s exceptional reach and payload with one of America’s most advanced anti-ship weapons. On October 7, 2026, Naval Air Systems Command published a presolicitation notice covering LRASM integration and test support for the B-52, bringing renewed momentum to an effort that could eventually reshape how U.S. long-range airpower contributes to maritime warfare. More than another missile certification, the initiative points toward a wider American strategy built around distributed firepower, operational unpredictability and the ability to threaten hostile naval forces from multiple domains and launch axes.
NAVAIR’s announcement is carefully defined. The command intends to enter sole-source negotiations with Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control for a Cost Plus Fixed Fee delivery order under an existing Basic Ordering Agreement. The prospective work covers missile software updates, associated testing, test-asset repair and failure review boards. NAVAIR identifies Lockheed Martin as LRASM’s sole designer, developer, manufacturer and integrator, arguing that the company possesses the knowledge, experience and technical data needed within the government’s required timeframe. The notice, however, is a presolicitation rather than an operational fielding announcement: it provides no contract value, certification date or confirmed B-52 LRASM loadout, and states that the government is not committed to making an award.

The reference to missile software updates is particularly revealing because LRASM integration is not simply a question of fitting a weapon beneath a bomber. The B-52, its weapons-management architecture, launch equipment, missile software, safety logic and mission systems must operate as a coherent system. That effort is taking place while the bomber itself enters one of the most extensive modernization periods in its history. In September 2026, the U.S. Air Force said ongoing B-52 weapons-integration work includes the latest variants of LRASM and the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile alongside new radar, communications and propulsion programs intended to keep the aircraft operationally relevant into the 2050s. This creates a broader picture in which LRASM is not an isolated modification but one element of a much more capable future B-52 weapons ecosystem.
The pairing also has considerable technical logic. LRASM, designated AGM-158C, draws heavily on the JASSM family architecture already associated with the B-52. The bomber has demonstrated the ability to carry eight AGM-158-family JASSMs internally on its Conventional Rotary Launcher while accommodating another 12 weapons externally, creating a 20-missile JASSM architecture. That makes a similarly large LRASM load technically conceivable, but it should not yet be described as an established B-52 configuration because the October NAVAIR notice gives no carriage number. What is already clear is the potential operational value of pairing a high-capacity bomber with a weapon NAVAIR says was designed for long-range attacks against high-threat maritime targets while reducing dependence on persistent ISR, network links and GPS in contested electronic-warfare environments.
This distinction goes directly to the strategic logic of the program. An LRASM-equipped B-52 would not need to become a penetrating bomber or independently search the ocean for enemy warships to be useful. Its strength would more likely come from functioning as a high-capacity, globally deployable reservoir of maritime firepower, releasing stand-off weapons from outside the densest portions of hostile air defenses while other U.S. assets contribute sensing, targeting, electronic warfare and additional weapons. A bomber formation could potentially add considerable salvo depth to attacks already being generated by submarines, surface combatants, carrier aviation, land-based forces and other Air Force platforms. Missiles arriving from different directions or on separated timelines could also force an opposing naval formation to divide attention, sensors and defensive interceptors across a more complex threat picture.
There is an important limit to that concept: missile autonomy should not be confused with an autonomous maritime kill chain. LRASM’s guidance is designed to reduce reliance on continuous external support and NAVAIR says it can operate from less-precise targeting information, but mobile naval forces must still be detected, identified and located with enough accuracy for weapons to be placed into the correct battlespace. The true value of the B-52/LRASM combination would consequently depend on the wider U.S. targeting architecture, space-based sensors, maritime patrol aircraft, submarines, unmanned systems, tactical aviation and other classified or unclassified intelligence networks, as much as on the missile itself. In a highly contested Indo-Pacific environment, the American advantage would likely come from combining those sensors with multiple shooters rather than expecting any single platform to dominate the engagement.
The bomber-force transition adds another layer. The B-1B became the first U.S. Air Force bomber to reach early operational capability with LRASM in 2018, giving the service an established heavy-bomber counter-maritime mission. Yet the Air Force has also made clear that its long-term bomber structure is intended to transition toward a force centered on the rebuilt B-52 and the next-generation B-21 as legacy aircraft are gradually retired. Integrating LRASM on the B-52 could help preserve heavy-bomber maritime strike capacity across that transition rather than leaving the capability concentrated on a shrinking B-1 fleet. The June 2026 employment of LRASM by a B-2 during a live-fire sinking exercise north of the Mariana Islands reinforces the same wider trend: anti-ship warfare is becoming increasingly embedded within U.S. long-range bomber operations rather than remaining primarily a naval aviation mission.
The Indo-Pacific geography makes this especially relevant. China has built increasingly capable naval, air, missile and sensor forces designed in part to make U.S. operations around the Western Pacific more difficult and costly. A B-52 armed with LRASM would not erase those challenges, but it could add another layer of uncertainty to Chinese operational planning. Beijing would have to consider maritime strikes originating not only from carrier aircraft, submarines or regional bases, but from heavy bombers approaching from widely separated directions and potentially operating from locations well beyond the first island chain. Pacific Air Forces already uses Bomber Task Force deployments to operate strategic bombers from a broad array of overseas and continental U.S. locations, explicitly emphasizing resilience and operational unpredictability. LRASM could give that existing deployment model a more powerful counter-maritime dimension.
This geographic elasticity may be more important than basing the bomber at any single Pacific installation. Guam would remain an important staging and support location, but the strategic attraction of the B-52 is that American maritime strike would not have to depend exclusively on Guam. Bombers could potentially generate sorties from other Pacific facilities, Alaska, Hawaii, Australia or the continental United States, subject to mission requirements, tanker availability and political access. That creates what could be described as deterrence through uncertainty: an opponent must account for where U.S. firepower might originate, which platforms may carry it and how different launch forces could be combined. The objective is not simply to increase the number of missiles available, but to increase the number of credible American strike combinations an adversary must detect, track and counter.
The same logic applies to salvo generation. A large bomber weapons capacity becomes especially useful when paired with naval and air-launched weapons attacking across multiple axes. An opposing fleet might face submarines threatening from below the surface, ship-launched missiles approaching from another direction, tactical aircraft operating closer to the theater and B-52s supplying additional stand-off weapons from much farther away. Even where individual elements of such an attack can be defended against, the cumulative burden on surveillance systems, command networks, electronic-warfare assets and interceptor inventories could become much harder to manage. From a U.S. perspective, this is one of LRASM integration’s most compelling attributes: the B-52 would add mass without requiring Washington to concentrate all of its valuable strike platforms close to the adversary.
Industrial capacity remains a critical part of that equation. A bomber capable of carrying a large missile load provides only part of the required combat power if available stocks cannot support repeated operations. The United States would need enough LRASMs, JASSMs and related stand-off weapons to generate follow-on salvos after the opening stages of a conflict, while simultaneously maintaining weapons for other theaters and platforms. Launch-platform expansion and missile production should consequently be viewed as closely linked components of deterrence. An adversary must not only believe that the United States can generate a powerful first response, but also that American industry and inventories can sustain long-range precision warfare if a confrontation becomes prolonged.
The prospective integration of LRASM onto the B-52 should be viewed as far more than another upgrade to an aircraft whose basic design dates to the early Cold War. If the current NAVAIR effort advances through software development, testing and eventual operational certification, the Stratofortress could become another high-capacity node in an increasingly distributed American maritime-strike network. Seen from that perspective, LRASM would make the B-52 less a dedicated ship hunter than a globally deployable reservoir of maritime firepower, one that commanders could insert into the Indo-Pacific battlespace when and where it offers the greatest operational advantage.
The broader U.S. strategy appears aimed at creating redundancy, range and uncertainty rather than relying on a single platform or basing model. A future opponent could be forced to consider maritime attacks from submarines, surface ships, tactical aircraft, stealth bombers and B-52s operating from dispersed locations, all potentially connected through a wider joint targeting architecture. That does not guarantee battlefield success, and much would still depend on targeting quality, tanker availability, resilient bases, missile inventories and communications under attack. Yet it would make successful aggression more difficult to plan with confidence. The October 2026 NAVAIR notice is still an early acquisition step, but the strategic direction behind it is increasingly visible: the United States is building a long-range force designed to preserve freedom of action, reinforce its allies and ensure that hostile naval forces cannot assume sanctuary anywhere across the vast Indo-Pacific.
