Ideal Aerosmith has unveiled Troublemaker, a low-cost Group 3 uncrewed aircraft designed to bring long-range strike, surveillance and decoy capabilities to forces operating without runways or heavy support infrastructure. With more than 10 hours of endurance, a claimed range exceeding 750 nautical miles and a payload of up to 30 pounds, the aircraft can operate as an expendable one-way attack platform or be recovered for reuse, giving forces a flexible way to generate affordable mass, extend combat reach and sustain operations in contested environments.

Ideal Aerosmith is expanding into the rapidly evolving attritable autonomous-systems market with Troublemaker, a Group 3 uncrewed aircraft built around a demanding proposition: delivering greater operational reach without the cost and infrastructure burden associated with larger unmanned platforms. In an announcement released on October 8, 2026, the North Dakota-based company presented Troublemaker as a low-cost, long-range UAS engineered for scalable strike operations, more than 10 hours of endurance and adaptable employment across austere and contested environments. Its significance extends beyond one-way attack, combining affordable mass, persistence, modularity and rapid production within a two-person-portable Group 3 platform.
Rather than defining Troublemaker solely as an expendable strike aircraft, Ideal Aerosmith is positioning it across a broader mission spectrum encompassing one-way attack, ISR, long-range surveillance and wingman or decoy operations. Additional specifications were subsequently disclosed by company executive David Markert in an October 2 interview with Breaking Defense and reported by the publication on October 9. According to that reporting, Troublemaker has a roughly 15-foot wingspan, carries a payload of up to 30 pounds and has a claimed range exceeding 750 nautical miles. The aircraft can be launched from a catapult or truck, while skid recovery allows it to be reused when a mission does not require its loss. These characteristics potentially give operators a platform that can shift between expendable and recoverable missions while reducing dependence on fixed runways or specialized launch aircraft.

The program becomes particularly noteworthy when affordable mass is considered as an industrial requirement rather than simply a promise of lower unit cost. Markert told Breaking Defense that Ideal Aerosmith had already built 26 Troublemaker aircraft and was entering low-rate production at approximately two systems per week. He said the company’s existing infrastructure could support production of as many as 20 aircraft per week if sufficient demand emerges. That potential tenfold increase does not mean such an output rate has been funded or ordered, but it provides important context for Ideal Aerosmith’s emphasis on scalability. Attritable systems generate military value through numbers only when industry can produce, replace and replenish them at rates compatible with sustained operations. Troublemaker’s production model could become as important as its flight performance if the system progresses toward significant procurement.
Troublemaker’s recoverability also creates a more complex operational proposition than the term “one-way attack” alone suggests. More than 10 hours of endurance, combined with a claimed 750-plus-nautical-mile range and the option to recover the aircraft, could allow the same basic platform to support persistent surveillance, reconnaissance, deception or collaborative missions before being assigned to an expendable strike role when operational circumstances require it. This introduces a potentially important cost-per-effect advantage: commanders would not necessarily need to sacrifice an aircraft on every mission simply because it is designed to be attritable. Ideal Aerosmith’s modular approach reinforces that flexibility, allowing the aircraft to be considered less as a single-purpose munition and more as a configurable uncrewed platform capable of supporting different effects across a campaign. The company has not publicly disclosed Troublemaker’s unit price, however, making it impossible at present to independently assess how its “low-cost” positioning translates into actual acquisition economics.
The architecture also points toward operations involving multiple coordinated uncrewed aircraft. Ideal Aerosmith’s formal announcement emphasizes interoperable, modular systems able to evolve alongside changing mission requirements, while Markert told Breaking Defense that Troublemaker can operate in swarms. Such an approach could allow groups of relatively inexpensive aircraft to distribute different functions, surveillance, deception, targeting support or kinetic effects, across several air vehicles instead of concentrating capability in a smaller number of expensive platforms. In contested airspace, that could complicate an adversary’s detection, identification and defensive prioritization while forcing air defenses to confront larger numbers of potential targets. Important technical questions nevertheless remain unanswered, including Troublemaker’s demonstrated level of autonomy, communications architecture, electronic-warfare resilience, navigation in GPS-denied environments and the scale at which coordinated operations have actually been tested.
Troublemaker also has a potentially significant U.S. Navy connection. Markert told Breaking Defense that the system has a Department of the Navy “sponsor” and said Ideal Aerosmith has responded to relevant government solicitations. That disclosure indicates a level of government interest but does not establish that the Navy has selected Troublemaker for a program of record, awarded a production contract or committed to purchasing a specific quantity of aircraft. Markert also indicated that the continuing-resolution environment could affect relevant new-start activities. From an operational perspective, however, a long-range system able to launch without a runway and operate from dispersed positions could have particular relevance to maritime and expeditionary concepts where forces must distribute sensors and strike capacity across widely separated locations. The exact nature of the Navy relationship, potential procurement pathway and funding status remain undisclosed.
The industrial base behind Troublemaker may ultimately determine whether those operational ambitions can be translated into military scale. Ideal Aerosmith says the aircraft is backed by a secure U.S.-based supply chain and that its Government Systems division is developing producible, interoperable uncrewed systems alongside mission-planning and command-and-control software, low-cost propulsion and scalable manufacturing capabilities. In a high-intensity conflict, the relevance of an attritable aircraft depends not only on whether commanders are prepared to lose individual systems, but on whether manufacturers can replace them faster than operational demand consumes them.
Troublemaker embodies a broader shift in uncrewed warfare: away from relying exclusively on small numbers of highly sophisticated platforms and toward combinations of reach, persistence, adaptability and production volume. Ideal Aerosmith still has important questions to answer on price, survivability, propulsion, autonomy, payload integration and government procurement. But if the company can validate its performance claims while converting stated manufacturing capacity into sustained production, Troublemaker could offer commanders an increasingly valuable capability, a long-range aircraft affordable enough to field in numbers, persistent enough to perform more than a single mission type, and adaptable enough to move between sensing, deception, collaboration and kinetic effects as battlefield requirements change.
