AirAsia to expand China reach with Penang-Shenzhen, Kota Kinabalu-Shantou routes
AirAsia is expanding its reach into mainland China with the launch of two new routes from Malaysia.
The low-cost carrier announced that it will commence the following services later in the year:
Penang International Airport (PEN) to Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX) from October 28, 2024 (four flights weekly)
Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KBI) to Shantou Airport (SWA) from November 16, 2024 (three flights weekly)
The flights are set to operate on the following schedules:

Flight schedule between Kota Kinabalu and Shantou starting November 16, 2024:
Both Shenzhen and Shantou are located in China’s Guangdong province, and are known for economic trading ports, coastal lines and modern park attractions.
The Chinese government has granted citizens of Malaysia visa-free entry until December 31, 2025.
According to Malaysian media outlet The Star, a “staggering” two million Malaysian visitors have traveled to China since the implementation of the visa-free policy.
To celebrate the launch of the new routes, AirAsia is currently offering promotional fares for flights between Penang and Shenzhen from RM329 ($75.00) one way as well as flights from Kota Kinabalu to Shantou with fares starting from RM299 ($69.00) one way.
Fares can be booked via the AirAsia app or the carrier’s website.
