Massport to simulate plane crash at Boston Logan International Airport
Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), the operator of BOS Airport, is to conduct a plane crash simulation at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in order to prepare for potential emergencies.
The exercise aims to evaluate coordination, communication and response in a hypothetical aircraft crash on the runway. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires this type of drill to be held every three years.
The crash simulation is set to be held on September 20, 2024, from 09:00 to 12:00 local time. About 150 people will take part, including actors playing the roles of crash victims.
There will be “emergency vehicles from various agencies in the vicinity”, the Massachusetts Port Authority added. Massport Fire Rescue and other official institutions, including the Boston Fire Department, Boston EMS, Massachusetts State Police and the US Coast Guard, will be involved in the exercise real time.
According to the local media, first responders will practice handling patients in an improvised accident scene and put out a small fire. Residents close to the airport might spot a US Coast Guard boat and a Massachusetts State Police helicopter in the area for the training exercise.
BOS airport will remain open throughout the exercise, the airport operator added.
The exercise will be held just a few days after a small twin-engine Cape Air Cessna 402 executed an emergency landing at BOS Airport with only one set of landing gear deployed.
According to an official from the Massachusetts Port Authority, the aircraft “had a landing gear issue” shortly after taking off from BOS Airport and was forced to return. No injuries were reported.
