China Southern to launch first flight from Australia to Beijing Daxing Airport
Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) will soon be the first airport from Australia to offer flights to Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX).
China Southern announced that the 11-hour direct service will commence on December 13, 2024, and operate four times a week. The frequency will be increased after an initial 10-week season.
The flights are scheduled to operate on the Airbus A330, configured with 28 business class seats and 258 economy class seats.

“We are proud to be the first airport in Australia offering flights to Beijing Daxing, providing passengers with unprecedented choice and convenience when traveling to Sydney,” Greg Botham, Group Executive, Aviation Growth & Group Strategy at Sydney Airport said in a statement.
“This marks another step in our commitment to improving connectivity with mainland China. With the market recovering to nearly 90% in the first half of 2024 and peaking at a remarkable 97% in July, these new flights will not only add much-needed capacity, but also provide a strong impetus for further recovery, reinforcing Sydney’s position as the premier gateway for traffic to and from China,” Botham added.
Air China is currently the only carrier providing a direct, nonstop service between SYD Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK).
PKX Airport, which opened in September 2019, is more than 100 kilometers away from PEK Airport, and is the second international airport in Beijing. It is currently the world’s largest single-building terminal and is nicknamed ‘The Starfish’ due to the way its kilometer-long terminals are spread out.
As of 2024, it is ranked sixth on the list of the world’s largest airports, based on its area size of 47 square kilometers.
