Bangladesh orders 25 Boeing aircraft as part of effort to ease US export tariffs
The government of Bangladesh has placed an order for 25 aircraft from Boeing, up from an initial order of 14, as part of negotiations with the Trump administration to lower the proposed export tariff.
According to Bengali news outlet Bdnews24 report, the primary goal of this order is to decrease Bangladesh’s trade deficit with the United States, which may lead the Trump administration to lift the extra 35% tariffs on Bangladesh.
Bangladeshi officials said that the planned purchase is anticipated to support the modernization and expansion of the fleet for Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the national flag carrier airline of Bangladesh.
The airline is planning a major expansion as it seeks to more than double its fleet size in the next 10 years. Currently, Biman Bangladesh Airlines operates 19 aircraft, which include Boeing 737s, 777s, 787 Dreamliners, and Dash 8-400 turboprops.
“We immediately need some aircraft, possibly within the next couple of years. Expanding Biman’s fleet has been part of the government’s long-term plan,” Bangladesh Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman told local reporters on July 27, 2025. “This year, in the context of the tariff issue, we’ve placed fresh orders.”
According to Rahman, many countries have placed similar orders. He added: “India and Vietnam have ordered 100, Indonesia 50.”
However, Rahman told The Business Standard that the country is seeking a tariff rate lower than the 26% proposed for India and the 20% finalized for Vietnam.
“We do not believe the US will impose a higher duty on us compared to our competitors,” he said.
When asked about the expected delivery time for the new aircraft, Rahman explained that, based on standard business practices or company policies, earlier orders are typically fulfilled first.
“Delivery will take time, and Boeing will supply according to its capacity,” Rahman said.
However, spokesperson for Biman Bangladesh Airlines Rowshan Kabir told The Business Standard that the carrier is “not aware about this matter.”
The 35% tariff on goods from Bangladesh is expected to take effect on August 1, 2025. The post Bangladesh orders 25 Boeing aircraft as part of effort to ease US export tariffs appeared first on AeroTime.
