Air Europa B737-800 skids off runway after bird strike
A Boeing 737-800 operated by Spanish airline Air Europa suffered a runway excursion upon landing at Palma de Mallorca (PMI), in the Balearic Islands, Spain, on May 8, 2026.
The aircraft (with registration EC-OBP) was operating flight UX6079, inbound from Madrid-Barajas (MAD), and upon landing in Palma at around 20.30 local time, it skidded until it became immobilized at the edge of the runway.
Emergency services flocked to the aircraft to evacuate its occupants, although no one was injured in the incident.
The original cause of the incident was, reportedly, a bird strike which the aircraft suffered earlier, just as it was departing Madrid. The impact appeared to have affected its frontal undercarriage and nose landing gear, as it was confirmed by pictures which were posted online later on the same day.
The pilots reportedly decided to carry on with the flight, rather than turn back to land, since the bird impact didn’t affect the capacity of the aircraft to fly safely and Air Europa has its own maintenance facilities in Palma, where any potential damage could be inspected and repaired.
Local media reported that, shortly after the incident and once it had been fully evacuated, the aircraft was later towed away for closer inspection. The affected runway remained closed for less than an hour. The post Air Europa B737-800 skids off runway after bird strike appeared first on AeroTime.
