Airbus has flown the U740-Valkyrie in Europe for the first time, announcing the milestone on 12 October 2026 as it pushes toward a combat-ready Collaborative Combat Aircraft capability by 2029. Reaching speeds of up to Mach 0.8 after a rocket-assisted take-off, the aircraft demonstrated in-flight mission changes and opened the way for testing Airbus’ MARS autonomous mission system, a key step toward fielding crewed-uncrewed combat teams while keeping critical mission software, data and system control in European hands.

Europe’s drive to field autonomous combat aviation at operationally relevant speed has crossed a significant threshold with the first European flight of the Airbus U740-Valkyrie. Airbus announced the milestone on 12 October 2026, positioning it as a major step toward a combat-ready Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) capability by 2029 for Germany and other European armed forces. Beyond the flight itself, the programme combines a flight-proven American air vehicle with a sovereign European mission-system architecture intended to accelerate crewed-uncrewed combat capability while retaining European control over critical software, mission applications, data and system hardware.
U740-Valkyrie Advances From Integration to European Flight Testing
Conducted at a test facility in Northern Europe, the U740-Valkyrie’s maiden European flight achieved all stated objectives, including a runway-independent rocket-assisted take-off, manoeuvres across different altitude and speed regimes up to Mach 0.8, and in-flight mission adjustments. The sortie establishes an important baseline for the European flight-test campaign, but it should not be interpreted as full validation of the aircraft’s future autonomous combat architecture. Airbus states that the flight now paves the way for more sophisticated testing involving its Multi-platform Autonomous Reconfigurable and Secure, or MARS, mission system, making the distinction between air-vehicle validation and mission-system maturation operationally significant.

The U740-Valkyrie provides Airbus with a comparatively mature air vehicle on which to build its European CCA proposition. Measuring 9.1 metres in length with an 8.2-metre wingspan, the aircraft has a maximum take-off weight of approximately three tonnes, a range exceeding 5,000 kilometres and a service ceiling of 45,000 feet. Its configuration incorporates an internal weapons bay and external underwing payload stations, while the aircraft is designed to operate autonomously or under the command of crewed combat aircraft such as the Eurofighter. The underlying Kratos Valkyrie first flew in the United States in 2019, allowing Airbus to avoid part of the schedule and development risk associated with a clean-sheet airframe and instead concentrate European engineering effort on missionisation, autonomy, connectivity and crewed-uncrewed teaming.
That programme logic is central to Airbus and Kratos’ stated objective of delivering a combat-ready CCA by 2029 to address requirements identified by the German and potentially other European armed forces. Rather than developing an entirely new aircraft from the ground up, the partners are effectively combining a proven flying platform with a European-controlled combat system in an effort to shorten the path toward operational capability. In practical terms, the U740 could provide additional range, firepower and survivability to crewed formations while accepting missions in threat environments where exposing a pilot would carry greater operational risk.
MARS Places European Sovereignty at the Mission-System Level
At the centre of the concept is Airbus’ MARS mission system, described by the company as the U740-Valkyrie’s European mission-system layer. MARS is designed to provide control over software, mission applications, data and associated system hardware while using AI-enhanced software to support autonomous mission execution and the coordination of multiple collaborative platforms. Airbus also emphasises a strict command hierarchy in which a human remains “on the loop,” pointing toward supervisory human control over increasingly autonomous mission execution rather than conventional remote piloting. Critical decisions, according to Airbus, are intended to remain governed by established rules of engagement together with applicable ethical and legal standards.
The sovereignty implications are particularly significant for Europe. The U740 is based on the US-developed Kratos Valkyrie and should not be characterised as a wholly indigenous European combat aircraft. Instead, Airbus is placing sovereignty at the mission-system and operational-control level, creating a layered model in which a mature foreign-origin air vehicle is combined with European-controlled software, mission data and command architecture. That approach could allow European air forces to balance urgency with greater operational autonomy while avoiding the timelines associated with developing every element of the platform domestically.
The aircraft’s rail-launch capability, alongside conventional runway operations, could also support future force dispersal and air-base resilience in a contested environment, although these remain prospective operational advantages rather than capabilities validated by the maiden flight. Within Airbus’ wider roadmap, the U740 is also positioned as a foundational step toward broader collaborative combat aviation, including future Eurofighter teaming and the larger U760 Ravenstorm planned for the early 2030s.
The first European flight of the U740-Valkyrie represents more than an aviation milestone. It demonstrates Airbus and Kratos’ attempt to compress the path from experimentation to credible combat capability by combining a proven air vehicle with a sovereign European mission-system layer at a time when European air forces are seeking greater combat mass, survivability and freedom of action. The decisive milestones now lie ahead: progressively more complex MARS-equipped flight testing, validation of autonomous mission functions, secure crewed-uncrewed cooperation and eventual operational integration with the Eurofighter. If Airbus and Kratos sustain their stated 2029 objective, the U740 could become one of Europe’s earliest operational bridges from traditional fighter-centric air power toward distributed, software-defined and collaboratively autonomous combat aviation.
