U.S. and European Firms Expand Air Defense Against Shahed Drones With Autonomous Interceptors

European missile manufacturer MBDA and U.S.-based Fortem Technologies are expanding their partnership to integrate autonomous drone interceptors into allied air defense networks, offering new options to counter Shahed-type attack drones and other unmanned aerial threats. The agreement combines destructive interception and drone capture capabilities, allowing military forces to adapt their defensive response while reducing reliance on conventional surface-to-air missiles.

The cooperation responds to growing demand for counter-drone systems capable of addressing increasingly diverse aerial threats without relying exclusively on conventional surface-to-air missiles. By integrating autonomous interceptors into command-and-control architectures already in service, the two companies aim to provide military operators with additional engagement options for protecting forward positions, military installations, and critical infrastructure.
According to announcements published by Fortem Technologies and MBDA on October 12, the agreement extends a technical collaboration established in 2024, when Fortem’s DroneHunter interceptor was integrated into MBDA’s Sky Warden counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) architecture. Under the expanded partnership, MBDA will offer DroneHunter to its military customers while jointly marketing FireThorn, an interceptor specifically developed to engage hostile unmanned aircraft. Both solutions are intended for integration into existing air defense networks, with international sales remaining subject to applicable export authorizations.
FireThorn provides the partnership’s principal hard-kill capability. The interceptor combines Fortem’s Ground-Launched Air-to-Air Munitions (G-LAAM) airframe with an MBDA-supplied NATO-approved warhead. Its design incorporates a high-speed autonomous aircraft using radar guidance to intercept hostile drones, providing a destructive engagement option against targets requiring direct neutralization rather than capture. The companies specifically identify Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones and their Russian Geran variants, as well as Orlan reconnaissance drones, among the threats the system is intended to engage.

The combination of radar guidance and an explosive warhead distinguishes FireThorn from Fortem’s existing capture-based interception systems. Rather than requiring direct human piloting during the interception phase, the system is designed to conduct engagements autonomously through its onboard guidance capabilities. This approach could allow operators to respond to incoming hostile drones while reducing the workload associated with controlling individual interceptions. However, the manufacturers have not specified FireThorn’s maximum engagement range, operating altitude, interception speed, or warhead weight in their October announcement.
DroneHunter addresses a different requirement through an autonomous interception mechanism using a net. Instead of destroying an approaching aircraft with an explosive charge, the interceptor physically captures its target, reducing the risk of collateral damage associated with conventional kinetic engagements. This capability is particularly relevant near civilian infrastructure, populated areas, and installations containing sensitive equipment. Recovering captured aircraft can also facilitate technical exploitation by allowing specialists to examine onboard electronic components, navigation systems, and other recovered equipment.
Fortem’s SkyDome family of systems combines TrueView radar sensors, command-and-control software, and autonomous DroneHunter interceptors to detect, track, and engage unauthorized aircraft. Integrating these capabilities into MBDA’s Sky Warden architecture creates opportunities to coordinate different defeat mechanisms within a common operational framework. Sky Warden follows a layered counter-drone approach, allowing operators to select engagement methods according to the detected threat and the environment surrounding the protected area.
From a tactical and operational perspective, the partnership provides armed forces with additional flexibility when protecting military bases, ammunition depots, command posts, and deployed units. FireThorn offers a destructive interception option against attack drones, while DroneHunter provides an alternative when limiting collateral damage is a priority. These complementary capabilities could allow commanders to allocate defensive resources more selectively, reserving conventional surface-to-air missiles for threats requiring larger engagement envelopes. Their effectiveness against coordinated attacks will nevertheless depend on sensor coverage, target identification, available interceptor stocks, and integration with existing command networks.
The agreement also allows Fortem to expand its access to European and allied defense markets through MBDA’s established customer relationships and air defense portfolio. Fortem reports operational deployments of its technologies in Ukraine, the Middle East, and East Asia, although it has not disclosed engagement statistics for FireThorn. The jointly developed interceptor is being displayed at MBDA’s booth during AUSA 2026, held in Washington from October 12 to 14, allowing military delegations to examine the system alongside the companies’ other counter-drone solutions.
The expansion of this cooperation comes as NATO members and European governments reassess their air defense requirements following the extensive use of Shahed-type attack drones and reconnaissance UAVs in Ukraine. These threats have exposed the difficulties of maintaining continuous protection against relatively inexpensive aircraft when defensive operations rely primarily on conventional missile inventories. By combining American autonomous interception technology with European missile expertise, MBDA and Fortem are pursuing a more diversified defensive architecture. For European and allied forces, the central objective is to reinforce short-range air defense while preserving higher-value interceptors for combat aircraft, cruise missiles, and other threats requiring greater engagement capabilities.
