American Airlines in talks with Boeing and Airbus over new widebody order
American Airlines is in contacted with both Boeing and Airbus over a possible new widebody aircraft order as part of “investments to improve business”.
On June 9, 2026, American Airlines held a virtual annual meeting of stockholders to go over the carrier’s performance and map out plans for the future.
During the call, American Airlines CEO Robert Isom advised shareholders that the company was currently addressing the “future of its widebody fleet” with Boeing and Airbus.
“We’ve been making several long-term investments to improve the business,” the American Airlines CEO said. “One good example is the work we’re doing right now to shape the future of our widebody fleet. We currently have an RFP in the market and are actively engaging with both Airbus and Boeing as we evaluate our next order for widebody aircraft.”
He added that this was the “right time” to look at what comes next with Boeing 777 retirements expected in the 2030s and the long cycle associated with widebody production.
