Brisbane Airport: Busy winter period amid school holidays and rugby season
Brisbane Airport (BNE) is preparing for a busy winter travel period, amid school holidays and a wave of rugby fans arriving in Queensland.
The airport claims that it is expecting 2.78 million passengers to pass through its Domestic and International terminals during the June/July 2025 school holiday period.
Queensland is a popular destination for Winter holidays in Australia. The state experiences mild winters, with temperatures in the season ranging between 11-21 degrees Celsius. Coastal areas like Cairns have even warmer winter temperatures, between 17-28 degrees Celsius.
On top of travelers seeking the Sunshine State’s warmth, a surge of British and Irish Lions supporters are expected to also arrive in Brisbane, with the city’s Suncorp Stadium set to host two rugby games over the Winter period.
Compared to the same period last year, Brisbane Airport is forecasting:
+1.4% passenger growth in the Domestic Terminal
+18.4% growth in the International Terminal
According to the airport, its busiest day of the season is expected to be Friday, July 18, 2025,, with a projected 82,400 passengers across both terminals, a figure that may equal or even surpass the airport’s record for daily passenger numbers.
Data sourced from the Incoming Passenger Card for the most recent 12 months to April 25, 2025 reveal the overseas inbound markets with the biggest annual growth are Japan, China and New Zealand.
“We know when Brisbane Airport is busy, Queensland is thriving with travelers spreading down to the Gold Coast, north to the Great Barrier Reef and west to the delights of the Queensland outback in winter,” Brisbane Airport spokesperson, Peter Doherty said in a statement.
“On top of travelers chasing the sun, we’re also expecting thousands of rugby fans following the British and Irish Lions tour, and Brisbane won’t be able to miss them, with Suncorp Stadium hosting two games,” Doherty added.
