Damascus Airport resumes international flights after fall of Bashar al-Assad
International flights have resumed at Syria’s Damascus Airport (DAM) for the first time since former president and dictator Bashar al-Assad was overthrown on December 8, 2024.
Images taken at the airport, and on flights to Damascus, show scenes of celebration as crew and passengers wear Syria’s independence flag proudly.
One of the first flights to arrive at Damascus Airport was Qatar Airways’ QR 410 from Doha’s Hamad International Airport (DOH).
Video clips taken from the A320-200 show passengers in a jubilant mood just before landing in Damascus.

The Doha-based carrier said that its decision to restart operations to Syria reflects the airline’s commitment to fostering regional connectivity and supporting passenger demand.
A report from the AFP notes that a Syrian Airlines plane bound for Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) in the United Arab Emirates took off at around 11:45 local time, marking the first international commercial flight from the airport since December 8, 2024.
Most international carriers ceased operations at Damascus Airport in 2012 because of the regime’s violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests.
To mark its first day of reopening after Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Syria’s new leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa visited Damascus Airport on January 7, 2025.
