Dominican airline Arajet signs sale-leaseback deal for 5 Boeing 737 MAX 8s
Dominican Republic low-cost airline Arajet has signed a sale and leaseback agreement for five Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets with Dubin-based SMBC Aviation Capital.
The two partners announced the deal on April 24, 2025, confirming that the Boeing 737 MAX 8s are scheduled to be delivered in 2026 and 2027.
SMBC described the arrangement as a “pivotal milestone” that underscores its “commitment to supporting Arajet’s growth and expansion plans”.
In a statement, Víctor Pacheco Méndez, CEO of Arajet, said the airline, first launched in 2022, was “thrilled” to be partnering with SMBC and expanding its fleet with the additional 737-8s.
“This agreement supports our mission to provide safe, efficient, comfortable, and affordable travel options across the Americas. The trust and collaboration shown by SMBC Aviation Capital reflects the strength of Arajet’s business model and our shared commitment to innovation and sustainable growth in the aviation sector,” Méndez said.
Conor Stafford, Head of Airline Marketing at SMBC said he was “happy” to sign a “significant deal” with Arajet and welcomed the airline as a new customer.
“This deal marks the start of our collaboration, and we are confident that these aircraft will greatly contribute to Arajet’s success. This milestone reflects our dedication to providing tailored leasing solutions that meet the evolving needs of our clients,” Stafford said.
On April 14, 2025, Arajet launched its first flight to the US. A Boeing 737 MAX 8 flew from Las Américas International Airport (SDQ), Santo Domingo, and Miami International Airport (MIA).
Arajet’s new service got the go-ahead when an Open Skies agreement was signed by the US and the Dominican Republic in December 2024.
Initially, the Miami service will be operated four times a week but will increase to a daily frequency in June 2025.
According to ch-aviation, Arajet currently operates 10 Boeing 737-8, with 17 more of the aircraft type scheduled to be delivered.
