Golden Dome chief warns program stops in October without new funding

US Space Force General Michael Guetlein, director of the “Golden Dome for America” program, said on August 11, 2026, that the homeland missile defense program could grind to a halt when fiscal year 2027 begins on October 1, 2026, unless Congress finds a new way to fund it.  

Speaking at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama, Guetlein warned that “there is no Golden Dome because there is no funding” if lawmakers fail to act. 

A program built on reconciliation 

The Department of Defense has requested $17.5 billion for Golden Dome in fiscal 2027, but only about $398 million of that sits in the regular base budget. The remaining roughly 97% depends on a second reconciliation package, the fast-track budget process that lets spending bills pass the Senate with a simple majority. Congress used reconciliation once already for the program, awarding it $25 billion in 2025 through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, of which 90% has since been obligated, according to Guetlein. 

Support for a third partisan reconciliation bill has been thin among both Republicans and Democrats. A continuing resolution, which Congress is likely to pass to avoid a government shutdown, would not solve the problem either, Guetlein said, because the Golden Dome has no annual base budget “top line” for a stopgap measure to extend.  

The Pentagon is weighing contingencies, including having the US Space Force keep funding capabilities the two programs share, such as the missile warning and tracking satellites L3Harris and Sierra Space were awarded to build in July 2026, though Guetlein said no decisions have been made. 

Progress reported alongside the warning 

Guetlein used the same appearance to disclose program milestones. Golden Dome broke ground on its first operational site at Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story, Virginia, and in June 2026 completed what he described as the most complex test yet conducted at the US Army’s White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, meeting every objective within six months of being tasked. 

Guetlein also confirmed that the space-based interceptor layer, a competition among 12 companies for up to $3.2 billion in awards, has cleared Gate One of a four-gate prize structure that will carry surviving bidders from design work through prototype construction, an on-orbit demonstration and, finally, integration into the wider Golden Dome architecture. 

New industry hub 

The Department of Defense separately launched the Golden Dome for America Ecosystem Hub on August 11, 2026, a digital portal meant to connect traditional contractors, startups and academic researchers directly with program managers.  

In the release announcing the hub, Guetlein reiterated Golden Dome’s total cost estimate of $185 billion, up from the $175 billion figure first announced in 2025, after $10 billion was added for accelerated space capabilities.The post Golden Dome chief warns program stops in October without new funding appeared first on AeroTime.
