INDO-PACOM commanders wants Aegis Ashore on Guam
During a Defense Writers Group virtual roundtable, the head of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command says he wants the Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense system on Guam from 2026.
Adm. Phil Davidson says he wants a 360-degree persistent and integrated air-defense capability in Guam as by 2026, missile threats from China would defeat the current Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system deployed in Guam.
“You are going to need a complete clock — a 360-degree coverage in order to help defend Guam,” Davidson was quoted as saying.
In order to meet the 2026 deadline, the admiral added that Congress has to approve the funding in the 2021 budget.
