L’SMS Emden fu un incrociatore leggero della Marina imperiale tedesca impiegato nella Prima guerra mondiale. L’incrociatore fu il secondo e ultimo esemplare della classe Dresden.
L’Emden fu impostato e progettato presso i cantieri navali di Danzica nel 1906. La nave venne varata il 26 maggio del 1908, ed entrò in servizio attivo il 10 luglio del 1909.
Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, i soldati polacchi hanno svolto un ruolo significativo nella battaglia di Montecassino, che è stata una serie di quattro offensive alleate condotte tra gennaio e maggio 1944 per sfondare la linea difensiva tedesca, pesantemente fortificata, nota come Linea Gustav che attraversava l’Italia centrale e Cassino.
