‘Pungent odor’ forces SWISS Boeing 777 to divert to Azores

A SWISS Boeing 777-300ER flying from Chicago to Zurich diverted to the Azores on August 25, 2026, after what the airline described as a “pungent odor” spread through the economy-class cabin, leaving several people feeling ill.

SWISS Flight LX9 was about midway across the Atlantic when the crew opted to divert to Lajes Airport on Terceira Island, according to a statement from SWISS. 

The pilots declared an emergency to be given priority handling from air traffic control. The aircraft, registered HB-JNF, landed safely at Lajes at 06:30 local time and taxied from the runway under its own power. 

All 222 passengers and 16 crewmembers left the aircraft normally. The crew included two pilots and 14 flight attendants. 

SWISS said approximately five passengers and one crewmember underwent precautionary medical examinations after briefly experiencing symptoms that included eye irritation, nausea and headaches. None required additional medical treatment. 

The airline has not identified the source of the odor. 

“At this time, we cannot say with certainty what caused the pungent odor in the Economy Class cabin,” SWISS said. “Our experts will thoroughly inspect the aircraft.” 

SWISS dispatched a replacement aircraft from Zurich to collect the passengers and crew from Terceira. The replacement flight was scheduled to arrive in Zurich at 22:15 on August 25. 

The disruption also forced the airline to cancel its August 25 Flight LX8 from Zurich to Chicago and the subsequent return flight. SWISS said it was arranging alternative travel for the affected passengers. 

Flight-tracking records identify HB-JNF as a Boeing 777-300ER. The aircraft had arrived in Chicago from Zurich before operating the overnight return flight. 

The incident follows several recent cases in which smoke or unidentified odors have disrupted SWISS long-haul flights. In July, a SWISS Airbus A330 diverted to Bangor, Maine, after smoke developed in the cabin.
