RIAT 2026 canceled as US bombers occupy RAF Fairford for Iran campaign
Organizers of the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) have canceled the 2026 edition of the world’s largest military airshow, citing uncertainty over access to RAF Fairford while the Gloucestershire base remains in use by the US Air Force for strikes against Iran.
The show had been scheduled to run from July 17 to 19, 2026. In a statement published on May 22, 2026, the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises said the decision followed lengthy discussions with the Royal Air Force and the US Air Force regarding access to the airfield. The 2026 edition had been built around a Fighter Meet theme intended to highlight the history of fighter aviation, and its proximity to the Farnborough International Airshow the following week was expected to draw a strong contingent of new combat aircraft.
Fairford tied up by Operation Epic Fury

Since early March 2026, the base has been staging B-1B Lancer and B-52H Stratofortress sorties as part of Operation Epic Fury, the US-led air campaign against Iran that began on February 28, 2026.
Eighteen B-1B and B-52 bombers arrived at Fairford between March 6 and 13, 2026, with sustained bombing missions following almost immediately. The base’s runway, ramp space, and munitions handling facilities have since been continuously occupied, leaving no realistic window for the dispersal of military and civilian aircraft typically associated with RIAT, which in July 2024 hosted 248 aircraft from nearly 30 countries.
The cancellation marks the first interruption to the show since 2020 and 2021, when COVID-19 forced two consecutive editions to be called off, including the planned 50th-anniversary edition.
Organizers said they remain committed to returning in 2027 and confirmed that RIAT27 will be held at RAF Fairford, with suitable fallback premises identified should the war continue into next summer. RIAT has been continuously associated with Fairford since 1985.
Ticketholders for the 2026 show will be contacted by the end of May 2026.The post RIAT 2026 canceled as US bombers occupy RAF Fairford for Iran campaign appeared first on AeroTime.
