Singapore Airlines B787-10 lands with smoke billowing from tyre due to brake issues

A Singapore Airlines B787-10 aircraft landed at Japan’s Narita International Airport (NRT) in Tokyo with a technical brake issue.

Flight SQ638 departed Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) at 00:15 local time, and arrived as expected in NRT Airport at around 07:30 local time.

The incident occurred on August 12, 2024, at around 07:38 local time when the B787-10 aircraft landed safely on Runway B (RWY16L/34R), albeit with smoke billowing from the plane tyres. 

Narita airport was forced to close the runway for around 50 minutes while mechanics inspected the aircraft. The airline’s ground engineering team resolved the issue and replaced one of the tyres on the B787-10.

All 260 passengers and 16 crew members on board the plane were safe. However, the incident resulted in a delay on the return flight, SQ637. The flight, which used the same aircraft, left at 13:28 local time, two hours after its scheduled departure time. 

A spokesperson for Singapore Airlines told media that flight SQ638 had experienced a “technical issue” with its brakes after landing in Narita. The airline also apologized to customers who were inconvenienced by the incident. 

The Narita Fire Department said that around 20 fire engines were dispatched. 

No fire was reported but tyre debris was found on the runway after the plane was towed away.
