Taiwan Tests U.S. MQ-9B Drones to Expand Surveillance of Chinese Naval Activity Around Island

Taiwan began flight tests of its first two MQ-9B SkyGuardian UAVs at Hualien Air Force Base, moving the aircraft from assembly into operational evaluation. The deployment expands Taiwan’s persistent maritime surveillance capacity and could improve tracking of Chinese naval and coast guard activity around the island.

The new aircraft are primarily intended to expand Taiwan’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance coverage over the maritime areas surrounding the island. Their deployment comes as the Taiwanese armed forces continue to face sustained People’s Liberation Army air and naval activity across the Taiwan Strait and around Taiwan’s eastern approaches. In this environment, endurance is a central factor. It enables operators to maintain surveillance of a contact for several hours without routinely committing fighters or crewed patrol aircraft, while reducing coverage gaps associated with repeated launch and recovery cycles.
On September 14, 2026, CNA and several Taiwanese media outlets reported that the first flights had taken place early that morning at Hualien after the completion of assembly and testing conducted jointly by the Taiwanese military and the manufacturer. The aircraft had previously been formally handed over to Taiwan in the United States on March 17 before being transported to the island. This sequence marks the transition of the program from delivery to operational evaluation on Taiwanese territory.
The MQ-9B is a large medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aircraft with a wingspan of approximately 24 meters and a Honeywell TPE331-10 turboprop engine. General Atomics states that the family can operate above 40,000 feet, placing it above most tactical unmanned systems used for shorter-range observation missions. The platform is also designed for beyond-line-of-sight operations through satellite communications. A C-band data link is used for line-of-sight control, while X-band, Ku-band or Ka-band links can support missions conducted at extended distances from the ground control station. These characteristics are particularly relevant for maritime operations, where persistence and communications range may matter more than speed.
Taiwan has also conducted integration tests in the United States with the MS-110 reconnaissance pod on the MQ-9B, providing an additional option for long-range imagery collection. The aircraft can carry electro-optical and infrared payloads as well as different radar systems, while maritime variants of the MQ-9B family can integrate surface-search sensors and Automatic Identification System equipment for vessel identification. General Atomics designed the platform around a modular architecture that allows operators to adapt payloads according to mission requirements.
The aircraft also retains a strike capability, although Taiwanese officials and several local analysts continue to describe intelligence and surveillance as its primary missions. The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency states that the system can contribute to intelligence collection, target acquisition, counter-land, counter-sea and anti-submarine missions. The MQ-9B family can also integrate precision-guided weapons. For Taiwan, however, the more immediate operational effect lies in detecting and tracking targets, maintaining tracks on moving vessels and transmitting updated information to command and targeting networks.
This function is particularly relevant in the context of gray-zone operations. An MQ-9B on patrol could follow People’s Liberation Army Navy vessels or China Coast Guard ships for extended periods, record changes in formation and activity, and transmit imagery to command centers without requiring a crewed aircraft to remain continuously in the same area. During a crisis, the same surveillance chain could support anti-ship missile batteries, maritime patrol aircraft or other effectors by providing updated tracks. The aircraft’s size and relatively low speed nevertheless impose operational constraints. Against a dense Chinese air-defense network or active fighter patrols, survivability would depend on standoff employment, route planning, protected communications and the use of sensors from outside the most heavily contested airspace.
Hualien adds an operational dimension to the deployment. Located on Taiwan’s eastern coast, the base opens directly onto the Philippine Sea and is less exposed than western airfields facing mainland China. It provides a position for missions along Taiwan’s eastern maritime approaches, an area that would become important if Chinese naval forces sought to operate behind the island or disrupt reinforcement routes. This location does not remove the vulnerability of fixed infrastructure, but it gives Taiwan another axis from which to maintain persistent surveillance coverage.
These initial flight tests therefore extend beyond the gradual introduction of four new unmanned aircraft. Taiwan is seeking to build a more persistent and connected picture of the maritime battlespace as Chinese forces increase the frequency and complexity of operations around the island. If the MQ-9B is effectively integrated with Taiwanese command systems and communications architectures compatible with those used by the United States, it could also improve the circulation of tactical intelligence during a regional contingency. For Beijing, this capability could reduce opportunities for undetected movement around Taiwan and complicate preparations for blockade or encirclement operations. For the United States and regional partners, stronger Taiwanese surveillance adds another sensor layer along the first island chain, within a security environment where detection, targeting, and operational access remain central to military planning in the western Pacific.
