U.S. Army AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters have demonstrated a new way to hunt drones, destroying three aerial targets after being guided by an AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel air-defense radar during Operation Skyfall II in Germany on October 6, 2026, according to details released by the Army on October 11. By allowing the Sentinel to detect threats at longer range and cue the Apaches into firing position, the test turned attack helicopters into networked counter-UAS shooters and demonstrated a potentially powerful option for NATO forces facing growing numbers of low-altitude drones: combining ground-based radar coverage with the Apache’s mobility and firepower to intercept threats before they reach troops and critical assets.

The U.S. Army has demonstrated a new employment concept in which AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters operate as airborne counter-UAS shooters cued by a ground-based air-defense network. The live-fire event took place on October 6, 2026, at Germany’s Grafenwoehr Training Area, where Apache crews destroyed three MQM-170 Outlaw target drones after receiving tracking information generated by an AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar. According to an official U.S. Army announcement published on October 11, Operation Skyfall II was designed to advance connectivity and interoperability between Army air-defense formations and combat aviation, creating additional defensive fire options against increasingly complex low-altitude unmanned threats.
Sentinel-to-Apache Network Creates a New Counter-UAS Kill Chain
Operation Skyfall II brought together air defenders from the 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade, and aviators from the 2nd Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade. Rather than requiring an Apache crew to independently search a large volume of airspace with its organic sensors, the AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel established the initial track and provided continuous low-altitude alerting, tracking and queuing information. The air-defense tactical operations center then relayed the target’s position in time and space to the Apache crews, allowing them to maneuver toward the threat, acquire it and execute the engagement. The U.S. Army specifically noted that Sentinel can detect threats at greater distance and provide earlier warning than the Apache’s onboard sensors, improving both engagement opportunities and aircraft survivability. Army acquisition documentation describes the AN/MPQ-64A3 Sentinel as a three-dimensional X-band, 360-degree phased-array radar with a 75-kilometer instrumented range, although the Army’s Skyfall II announcement does not identify the specific Sentinel subvariant employed during the exercise.

The significance extends well beyond connecting a radar to an attack helicopter. External cueing changes the Apache’s counter-UAS task from conducting a broad-area aerial search into a more focused interception and terminal-acquisition problem. Sentinel can establish and maintain the initial air track while the helicopter uses its mobility to position for engagement, potentially reducing the time crews must spend searching with organic sensors and compressing the wider sensor-to-shooter sequence. Importantly, Skyfall II should not be interpreted as demonstrating an autonomous Sentinel-to-Apache fire-control handoff. The Army describes a human-in-the-loop architecture in which air defenders detect and track the MQM-170, the tactical operations center maintains situational awareness and relays targeting information, and the Apache crew conducts the final acquisition and attack. All three Outlaw drones engaged by Apache crews were destroyed. This makes command-and-control integration and the movement of usable track data across different Army formations as significant as the physical intercept itself.
AH-64E Evolves Into a Networked Drone Hunter for Europe
The exercise also demonstrated how the AH-64E Apache Guardian’s weapons, sensors, mobility and digital architecture can be adapted to counter-UAS operations without converting the aircraft into a dedicated air-defense platform. U.S. Army imagery from Skyfall II shows an Apache firing its 30 mm chain gun while the Sentinel radar tracks the aerial target. The AH-64E carries the M230-series 30 mm automatic cannon and can also employ guided missiles and 70 mm rockets, giving crews access to multiple potential effectors depending on the target and engagement conditions. The Army confirmed three drone kills during Skyfall II but did not publish a weapon-by-weapon account identifying which munition destroyed each MQM-170. The imagery confirms 30 mm gun employment during the exercise, but it does not establish that all three targets were destroyed by the cannon. The broader technical significance lies in exploiting an attack helicopter already designed for increasingly networked operations. The AH-64E Version 6 configuration, for example, incorporates Link 16 communications capable of merging information from multiple networks into a wider operational picture, illustrating how modern Apache development has increasingly emphasized connectivity alongside lethality.
Skyfall II also marks an important progression from the first Operation Skyfall conducted in March 2026. During that earlier event, the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade demonstrated for the first time in the European theater that the AH-64E could serve as a viable counter-UAS platform and engage drones in air-to-air combat. Army aviators acknowledged at the time that such engagements represented a new mission profile for many Apache pilots and required development of new tactics, techniques and procedures. Skyfall II pushed the concept further by integrating ground-based detection, tactical command and control, external targeting information and repeated successful drone engagements into a single distributed kill chain. The evolution is especially relevant to NATO’s eastern flank. U.S. Army analysis of lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war has identified Russian small UAS as a persistent threat and highlighted how drone proliferation can compress tactical decision cycles to seconds. The MQM-170 should not be treated as a direct surrogate for every Russian reconnaissance drone, FPV system, loitering munition or one-way attack aircraft, but the exercise addresses the same broader operational challenge: detecting and defeating low-altitude unmanned threats quickly enough to protect maneuver forces and critical assets.
The concept also offers a potentially important expansion of counter-UAS magazine depth and shooter availability. An AH-64E able to receive targeting information from an external air-defense network gives commanders another mobile effector alongside dedicated short-range air-defense systems, electronic warfare capabilities, kinetic interceptors and other counter-UAS weapons. That does not mean the Apache replaces SHORAD. Its value is additive: ground-based radar can maintain surveillance while aviation assets reinforce a threatened sector, pursue a moving air target or contribute another engagement option when dedicated air-defense resources are committed elsewhere. Separating the sensor from the shooter also creates geographic flexibility because the Apache does not need to remain collocated with the radar generating the track. Such employment would still depend on communications resilience, airspace control, aircraft availability, ammunition expenditure, target classification and the survivability of rotary-wing aircraft within the adversary’s air-defense envelope. In a dense drone environment, those constraints will determine when using an Apache is operationally advantageous compared with other available effectors.
Operation Skyfall II shows that the U.S. Army is no longer examining the AH-64E only as an attack helicopter capable of independently shooting down drones. It is testing the Apache as a network-accessible airborne effector inside a wider layered air-defense architecture, where the best-positioned sensor can provide information to a separate platform carrying the weapon. By linking Sentinel surveillance, an air-defense tactical operations center and AH-64E crews into a common engagement sequence, the Army demonstrated a repeatable process that successfully destroyed three unmanned targets while continuing to refine the associated tactics, techniques and procedures. For U.S. and NATO forces facing an increasingly drone-dense European battlespace, the larger implication is not that the Apache becomes a substitute air-defense system, but that existing combat aviation can become another highly mobile shooter within an integrated counter-UAS network. If those data-sharing procedures and engagement concepts can be standardized across formations and allied forces, the approach could considerably broaden the number of sensors and effectors available to defend NATO forces against the evolving unmanned threat.
