Video: Delta flight delayed in Cancun after bees swarm Boeing 737 wing
A Delta Air Lines flight departing from Cancun, Mexico, was delayed after a swarm of bees gathered on the wing of a Boeing 737, creating an unusual ground delay for passengers heading out of the resort city.
Video posted to social media by a passenger shows a dense cluster of bees attached to the upper surface of the wing while the aircraft remained on the ground at Cancun International Airport.
The incident happened on June 11, 2026.
The video shows the bees clustered on the 737’s right wing as ground handling crews can be seen on the tarmac. One of the pilots informs passengers they will have an update about the delay “as soon as we figure out for ourselves exactly what’s going on here. Bees on the wing. That’s a new one.”
Aircraft can attract insects while sitting on the ground, particularly in warm weather. Bee swarms can gather around structures while searching for a new location after leaving a hive, and airport crews generally need to make sure the aircraft is safe before departure.
In this case, the delay ended when the airplane taxied from the gate with the swam still attached to the wing. During the takeoff roll as the Boeing gathered speed,.the bees can be seen detaching from the wing.
The Cancun incident was not the first time Delta passengers have been “bee-layed” by an unwanted swarm.
In May 2023, a Delta Air Lines flight from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport to Atlanta was delayed for several hours after bees gathered on the wing of an Airbus A320. That aircraft was moved to a different gate after passengers had already boarded.
Bee swarms have caused other aircraft delays around the world, including cases where airport crews called firefighters or beekeepers to remove insects from aircraft doors, wings or cargo areas. The post Video: Delta flight delayed in Cancun after bees swarm Boeing 737 wing appeared first on AeroTime.
