Vietnam Airlines secures financial backing to purchase 50 narrowbody aircraft
Vietnam Airlines has secured the backing of Vietcombank with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to purchase 50 narrowbody aircraft.
Vietnam Airlines and influential Vietnamese bank appeared together on April 23, 2025, to finalize arrangements for prepayments and long-term loans from 2026 to 2032, according to Dak Nong.
The agreement is part of Vietnam Airlines fleet building strategy over the next decade with the aim of significantly bolstering its operational capabilities for 2040.
According to Vietnam.vn, Vietcombank’s investment will allow the airline to expand its short and medium-haul network domestically and in Southeast and Northeast Asia.
Present at the signing ceremony were the Director and CEO of Vietnam Airlines, Le Hong Ha, and the Director and CEO of Vietcombank, Le Quang Vinh.
“The investment is aimed at expanding the short and medium-haul network in key markets such as Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and domestic markets, where demand for transportation is growing rapidly and competition is increasingly fierce,” Vietnam Airlines said according to Reuters.
Vietnam Airlines and Vietcombank have a long-standing history with the bank previously assisting with the funding for Boeing 787-9s, Airbus A350s and A321s.
Earlier in April 2025, Vietnam Airlines signed an MoU with CitiBank for $560 million to go towards its fleet expansion plans.
